The Mortal Kombat 2 Movie Trailer Is Finally Out...

It's been a pretty long wait, but we finally have at least a taste of how the Mortal Kombat movie sequel is going to look.

And... it looks promising.

The Blue Portal in Mortal Kombat 2 (2025)
A beautiful call-back to the old games.

Casting Karl Urban as Johnny Cage makes more sense when you realize they're going in the direction of Cage being washed up and not the current hotness. Beginning with Old Man Cage is an interesting direction, but a welcome one nonetheless, given that Old Man Cage is awesome. Cage also seems to be the new de facto main character, which is another welcome direction.

Jade, Kitana, Baraka and Shao Kahn are added to the mix. And they each have more screen time in the trailer than Cole Young. If the final movie is anything like this first trailer, it seems Cole may not have much to do with the proceedings after all. Hell, Cole's not even the one who makes the approach to Johnny Cage. There's a rumor going around that in the cut shown for test screenings, Cole's killed off within the first 20 minutes. It seems that WB finally realized that the first movie biffed the lore up so bad that they now have to furiously play catch-up, MCU-style. Better late than never, but it was such a waste of a good actor.

Also in the trailer: Noob Saibot. In the marketing, he's still referred to as Bi Han, but we all know: The sentient shadow was a dead giveaway (amongst other things). All in all, this trailer telegraphs that the production is at least trying to correct course. The only thing the trailer didn't communicate, however, is what the actual Mortal Kombat tournament itself will look like. Does it even take place in this movie, or do we have to wait yet again?
